Health Psychology

What is Health Psychology?

Health Psychology utilizes evidence-based treatments to help individuals adjust to new medical diagnoses, treatment, and survivorship; cope with chronic health conditions; and make lasting changes to improve health and well-being.  For most, therapy with a Health Psychologist is relatively short-term and highly structured around the health goals. Due to the chronic nature of many health conditions, some patients may come for a longer duration based on their specific needs and health circumstances. This specialty area views health from a holistic perspective and takes into consideration your life experiences and values in addition to your physical illness and symptoms.

Health Psychology is a specialization within the field of clinical psychology that explores how biological, social, and psychological factors influence health and illness.

Is Health Psychology right for me?

Unlike more general mental health providers, Health Psychologists typically have more knowledge of disease processes and physiology.  Health Psychologists understand how the body and mind influence each other and will assist you in learning new tools for managing the issues that arise with specific health conditions.  Therefore, Health Psychology services are appropriate for individuals who are dealing with health-related challenges as opposed to those whose concerns are primarily mental health in origin and not related to an underlying physical health condition.

Madison Health Psychology is likely to be a good fit for you if your goal is to improve your ability to cope with your physical health concerns, reduce the impact of your health concerns on your emotional well-being and daily activities, and improve your overall quality of life.

What will we focus on in our sessions?

  • Your physical symptoms

  • Emotional concerns you are experiencing in relation to your physical health

  • Difficulties you may have adjusting to changes in your physical health

  • The impact of health problems on other important areas of your life

  • Your values and what gives your life meaning and purpose

  • Goals you have related to your health and potential barriers to reaching your goals
